Abstract

Arabic word Al-Jahihiliyyah in its linguistic meaning is “the ignorance”. But as a Qur’ānic terminology, it does not mean the ignorance or lack of knowledge, education, information or awareness in general sense. The Holy Qur’ān takes the word Al-Jahihiliyyah as an age before the dawn of Islamic civilization of which foundation was laid by the Holy Prophet ﷺ. People before the dawn of Islam were ignorant of the laws of Allah Almighty and the messages of His Holy Prophets peace be upon them. They left and rejected those laws and messages and followed their own rituals which were damaging their rights and moralities. In brief this term is used as an antonym to Islam. The Holy Qur’ān mentions the term Al-Jahihiliyyah in four aspects: Zann Al-Jahihiliyyah i.e. false thought about Allah, thought fit for the age of idolatry, Huk’m Al-Jahihiliyyah i.e. Law of Ignorance, Tabarruj Al-Jahihiliyyah displaying the fineries as women as done in the days of ignorance and Ḥim’yatul Jahihiliyyah i.e. the arrogance of paganism. The Muslim scholars have view point of a “modern Jahihiliyyah “. It means that any society even after the dawn of Islam, stands on the laws repugnant the injunctions of Islam, is ignorant and is in the state of Jahihiliyyah. This article explores Qur’ānic the term Al-Jahihiliyyah in the light of the revealed texts of the Holy Qur’ān, the sayings of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, the views of Muslim predecessor and successor scholars and examples from the human history.
