There are four sources of Shariah. Quran and Sunnah primary and Ijma (Consensus) and Qiyas (Analogy) are considered as secondary. The fourth source of Shariah analogy is measured a principle for Quranic exegesis. As we see the Quranic verse (5:90) is evident on the prohibition of vinegar (which is derived from grapes) drinking only. This Quranic verse (5:90) also points out the prohibition of all forms of intoxicated beverages along with vinegar. This injunction of prohibition is derived from the analogical principle. This article deals with the role and significance of analogy in Quranic exegesis.
