Amīn Khawlī, a 20th century Egyptian exegete, contributed to the Qur’ānic sciences from several important aspects as he introduced some particular principles for the interpretation of the Qur’ān. He was well acquainted with the prevailing methods and trends in the Qur’ānic exegesis (i.e., the Tafsīr literature), as he examined them in a scholarly manner. The methodological principles he identified for the Qur’ānic interpretation can be divided into two major categories: 1), subject-wise method of interpretation of the Qur’ān must be followed, which, according to him, is mostly ignored by the traditional scholars in their exegeses of the Qur’ān; and 2), the Qur’ān is revealed in the Arabic language so its linguistic dimension must be thoroughly observed in its interpretation, in particular, in case of disagreement of the opinions of the exegetes. al- Khawlī was of the opinion that the full command of the Arabic language can only guide the exegetes to reach the true and deeper meaning of the Qur’ānic text. Employing such principles, he offered a standard to settle the various disputes related to the interpretation of the Qur’ān. This paper deals with the exegetical contributions of al- Khawlī and articulates the principles introduced by the scholar under study in his writings. It also examines whether or not al- Khawlī’s approach is in accordance with the Muslim tradition of the Qur’ānic study.
