Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze and examine the methodologies and manners adopted by writers in Quranic Urdu lexicography. It begins with an introduction, a sketchy overview of the origin and the development of lexicography in the Arabic literature. Some prominent efforts made by the pioneer philologists like Khalil bin Ahmad Alfrahidi, Abu Amar Alshaibani and Ibn e Duraid, have been briefly described. A short introduction of Arabic lexical work based on Quranic words has also been given which was originated by Ibn e Abbas, and flourished by earlier lexicographers'works on Quran like "Ma'ani  ul-Quran" by al-Farra, "Majaz ul-Quran" by Abu Ubaida and "Taweel ul-Mushkil fi Ghareeb il- Quran" by Ibn Qutaiba. Under the effects of Arabic work, Urdu Quranic lexicography was introduced in Sub Continent of Indo-Pak and Shaheedud-Din Ahmad is mentioned as pioneer in this field. The paper is based mainly on data and information collected from various books on Quranic Urdu lexicography. These books have been analytically reviewed. A list of three kinds of Quranic indexes in Urdu has also been given at the end of the article.
