Abstract

From the last almost two decades, Islamic feminism has been the subject of analysis. This debate has raised many questions like does feminism have any space in Islam? Is Islamic feminism a movement of Muslim women? Is Islamic feminism a secular discourse or a movement? Is Islamic feminism against the basic/fundamental principles of Islam? Is Islamic feminism opening new doors to achieve gender equality for Muslim women? This paper presents a critical analysis of such questions and many others in the light of work done by prominent Islamic feminists including Amina Wadud, Asma Barlas, Irshad Manji, Fatima Mernissi, and Margot Badran.
