History proved that every human society tried to provide economic protection to its needy members. The contemporary Western social security systems have emerged as a result of evolutionary process. But the idea of social security is not new for Muslims. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) has given the Islamic concept of social security which was all inclusive, self-sustained and comprehensive. He made it sure that the deprived and neglected classes of the society should be fully protected. And he took many effective steps and measures to ensure the social security of poor, orphans, widows, old age people and disabled persons. Among all these measures Zakāt, a compulsory levy, is a permanent institution for the sake of well-being of deserving persons. The Holy Prophet (SAW) fixed the status that its giving is a duty and receiving is a right. Islam was the first religion to institutionalize the charity. Islamic social system does not only consist of the injunctions of the Holy Qur’ān and Hadīṯh but also the precedents of the Righteous Caliphates. These all-encompassing system established by the Holy Prophet (SAW) was strengthened by his followers as well. They enforced this system in true letter and spirit. Another step of great importance is to impose the liability on the state. So, the caliph is required to protect them from internal and external enemies and look after their material and moral welfare. This research paper aims to highlight the salient features of the Prophetic (SAW) concept of social security.
