Abstract

General affliction (Umūm al-Balwā) is considered to be among seven reasons for mitigation in Islamic law. It is defined by Muslim jurists as conceding an impermissible practice becoming unavoidable for people at large to an extent that nobody gets rid of it. Keeping in view the consequences of this principle they have provided with all necessary details of it. The most important condition for application of this rule is that impermissibility of the issue that had become General affliction must not be established by divine text. Furthermore, state of necessity must be factual not fanciful. They have clearly stated that this principle brings mitigation only where necessity is not limited to some people but it must be prevailed in society. The use of gelatin derived from pig may be permissible on two grounds; principle of denaturation and principle of General affliction.
