In the modern west, study of religion has become an umbrella term for a number of approaches. There are various social or scientific ways of studying religions – anthropologically, historically, psychologically, sociologically, and through gender studies. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically based, and cross-cultural perspectives. Every approach marked out its boundaries and features in different ways by focusing on religion and its relation with different aspects of human life. This article will offer an overview of this development in modern west and then surveys the main approaches used today in western academia, as well as provide opportunity to scholars of Islamic Studies to analyze these approaches in Islamic perspective.
