Sulaimān ibn Ahmad Al-Ṭabarāni (Died: 360 A.H) was a well-known Muhaddith(Hadīṯh scholar). He was one of the most prominent Muhaddith of his age. He is known primarily for three works he produced on Hadīth, the one of them is “Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat” which contains the narratives of the Prophet (SAW). He collected in this book, not only that, rather he critically studied their Sanad (chain of transmitters) and Matn (text) according to the fundamentals of scientific study of Hadith (which was developed/established by Muhaddithīn), and further issued his rulings about every narrative he found defected. This paper basically is a brief statement of the efforts of Imam al-Ṭabarāni in developing the science of the critical study of hadith through presenting a facet of this science. It is a statement of some examples for the explanation of Imam Ṭabarāni’s methodology in the critical study of defected Ahādīṯh with dispute from his book “al-Mu’jam al-Awsat”. This article is essentially divided into: preface, three chapters, and conclusion. The preface includes the importance of critical study of hadīṯh, meaning of ‘illah, its types, and the status of “Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat” in the science of critical study of Hadīṯh.
