Allāma Muhammad Iqbāl (1877-1938) is considered one of the most prominent and affective poet-thinkers who promoted creativity among the modern Muslims. Iqbal was distinct for his intellectual courage, confidence and innovative approaches. He received Islamic and Oriental education in his childhood followed by the modern western education which contributed tremendously in the making of Iqbal. His intellectual and philosophical genius deliberated on all the important aspects of human life including art, literature and their role in the society. His prose and poetic writings in Persian, English and Urdu rarely ignore this very important aspect of human existence on the Planet. A quick glance at his writings in this regard reveals the richness and fertility of his mind pertaining to beauty, art, creativity, conflict between the artist and nature etc. This article sets out to survey the ideas and thoughts of Allāma Iqbāl about art, literature and their pivotal role in the making/development of, or otherwise, human society.
