This article focusses the approaches of two early Muslim theologians alShāfaʿī(d204/820) and al-Ṭaḥāwī d 9 regarding principle of preference in
solving Contradictory Ḥadīth whether the are agreed with each other or
disagreed? The examples from their books Ikhtilāf-al-Ḥadīth and Sharaḥ Ma’ānī
al-Āthār, have been taken, discussed and analysed. Both the scholars have
discussed and solved many issues by giving preference to one Ḥadīth on the
other. They differed on some issues with each other for example al-Shāfaʿī has
given preference to the Ḥadīths in which the rophet Muḥammad raised his
hands in prayer but al-Ṭaḥāwī resolved the contradiction with abrogation.
Similarly, they differed about the matter of passing in front of the man who is
saying prayer and resolved the contradiction with the help of preference and
abrogation respectively. But they agreed on the issue of prayer at the time of
eclipse and the matter of the fasting in case of impurity.
