Ḥadīth is the second source of Islamic laws. In order to derive laws from the
aḥādīth, it is implicit that knowing the meaning of those aḥādīth is
indispensable likewise the knowledge about the background of the revelation
of Quranic verses is essential for understanding the exact meanings of the
Qur‘ān. From the earliest period of the Ummah, scholars of aḥādīth
(Muḥaddithin) dealt with this topic with due significance. However, this topic
gained some extra attention from the researchers in the fourth century. This
research paper discusses the meanings, description and significance of
Gharīb ul Ḥadith. One of The most well-known and admirable book on these
sciences in known as: الخطابی طلیمان أبى امام البن الحدیث غسائب کخاب .) Gharīb alḤadith by Imām Abū Sulaimān al-Khattābī) The great contribution of the
imām in the field of Ḥadith sciences is widely recognized and acknowledged
by Moḥaddithīn, Mufassirīn, scholars, ‘Ulema and students of Ḥadith
sciences. The argument made in the article brings out the importance of
analyzing and introducing a unique contribution of Imām Khattābi. Several
examples are quoted with authentic references. The article comprehensively
includes the relevant discussion concerning the need of the present age and a
comparison of jurisprudential issues is also presented. The research made in
the article is highly worthwhile and broadens the exposure of the subject for
the jurists of Islamic laws and students of ḥādīth.
