The article comprehensively deals with the activities in the field of collection, compilation, and spread of the knowledge of Hadith. The Umayyad period particularly witnessed intensive activities in this field for various reasons; namely the presence of many of the companions of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and their devotion and dedication to the person of the Holy Prophet (SAW).
The compilers of Hadith travelled far and wide for the collection of Hadith and their verification. The extension of the Islamic empire also needed the learning of Hadith for the neo-Muslims. Various centers of learning of Hadith were established in Madinah, Macca, Kufa, Basra, and Damascus.
