Abstract

Obscure Words of the Qur’ān is an important topic among those discussions of the Qur’ānic Sciences which relate to the words of the Qur’ān. The trend of writing books on this subject started in the era of compilation. Moreover, the interpretation of Obscure Words of the Qur’ān became the topic of discussion in the Qur’ānic Commentaries also. In this regard, the best example is of Imām Ṭabarī’s Qur’ānic Commentary “Jāmi’ al-Bayān ‘an Tāwīl ‘Āy al-Qur’ān” which is the first compendious exegesis of the Qur’ān and is prestigious to be considered as one of the primary sources for almost all the later commentaries. Along with the other traits of the Qur’ānic Sciences, Obscure Words of the Qur’ān have also been elaborated in comprehensive detail. Imām Ṭabarī, while interpreting the Qur’ānic verses, explained Obscure Words of the Qur’ān in a substantiated manner. He not only cites different interpretations to explain them but also provides the detailed evidences in their support. At some instances, he prefers a specific maxim and to describe the reason of his preference is also his methodology. The different methods adopted by Imām Ṭabarī to interpret Qur’ānic Obscure Words are the eminence and distinction of his exegesis.
